ORBIT-O-R MODERN OBSERVATION AND RECORD
In relation to the current global issue, the climate crisis, Orbit-O-R connects technological advancement, and space exploration through historic and modern observation & record. Technological advancement offers the ability to explore alternative locations for the species of the planet and to continue habitation in the event of a natural or man-made disaster. It provides a greater understanding of the solar system, a space not visible to the human eye.
There are many global catastrophic risks that are known to humans such as asteroid impact, and volcanic eruptions, however, above all, climate change is triggered and widely influenced by human life and the extensive greed for material consumption. As an example, on earth, we produce “300 million tons of plastics every year.” Placing plastic as the 3rd most used substance on the earth beneath water and concrete. Another example reported, “The oceans absorb about 30% of the carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere, which in turn increases the ocean acidity. The oceans may be acidifying faster today than they did in the last 300 million years, primarily due to human activities.” Mathew, S. (2021). Therefore Orbit-O-R utilises a design methodology that explores the interdisciplinary space between art and design. Connecting material palettes that consist of smart materials, holding all key properties required for application, such as sustainable credentials, form representation, constructional and infrastructure innovation.
Orbit-O-R responds to the local, cultural, environmental and political requirements in connection to The Cinema Museum, through the restoration, preservation and conservation of infrastructure. Alongside providing sufficient sustainable management of the historic environment is the proposed engagement with the local community. Orbit-O-R responds with a program that provides communal benefit and cultural value, it will contribute towards improving education and awareness. Utilising sound, light and technology to simulate the internal programmatic skin creates a VR experience to communicate an appropriate response through the internal envelope.
The Cinema Museum following the preservation and restoration remains as The Orbit-O-R Historic Museum, to represent historic observation and record, it provides opportunities for access to resources, education, volunteering, training and jobs. While The Orbit-O-R Modern Museum represents Modern Observation and Record, targeting a variety of generations. Incorporating new opportunities surrounding technological advancement, science, engineering, design and research, sectors that are not easily accessible to the local community. Orbit-O-R will demonstrate the ability to connect historic and modern aspects, through an external contrast and internal collaboration, representing the ability to preserve a historic environment through a balance of conservation and new development.
A focus on modern observation and record as a subfield to cinematography and image capture, following the exploration of the importance of human history and how it continues to hold a critical role in expanding the understanding of past eras, influencing public opinion and bringing forward societal change, providing the opportunity for universal discovery. Technological advancement redefines boundaries, the sense of space becomes ambiguous, and the user simultaneously becomes part of the scenery through perception and interpretation. Our surroundings become an extension of our imagination. Orbit-O-R has explored the past, and present and has evolved to explore the future of architecture orientated around the technological advancement of Photographic and Cinematic processes. Utilising sound, light and technology to simulate the internal programmatic skin, by communicating an appropriate response through the internal envelope morphing both physical and virtual realities to orchestrate design stimuli. The proposal for Orbit-O-R has been driven by the aim to design beyond our sense of sight, with a central focus on sensory design, exploring how space is experienced and manipulated by movement.
