Emma Sidey

Architecture has never felt like a choice for me. It has always been an instinct, an impulse, and a way of understanding the world long before I knew its name.

I was eight years old when I first discovered what it meant to design with intention. In the centre of our new garden stood a single tree, and my dad casually promised that one day he would build a treehouse for me and my siblings. That throwaway comment became a mission. For months, I filled notebook after notebook with floor plans, sections and different concepts, each one a new attempt to persuade him that this would be the design worth building. The treehouse was never constructed, but the obsession it sparked never left me. Looking back, that was the first time I understood how drawing could become a form of thinking, and how space could begin to tell stories.

I am an Architectural Designer with a First-Class honours degree in BA (Hons) Architecture RIBA Part 1, awarded in 2023, and a Master of Architecture RIBA Part 2, awarded with Distinction. Throughout my architectural education, I have consistently maintained a First-Class academic level, with the projects featured within this portfolio awarded First-Class grades.

My work is driven by a desire to push the boundaries of architectural thinking. I am particularly interested in the intersection of architecture, science and technology, and how intelligent, responsive systems can challenge the limitations of traditional practice. I believe architecture can offer more than form or function; it can become a tool for adaptability, innovation, ecological awareness and real-world impact.

My MArch research developed this ambition through a research-by-design methodology, moving iteratively between theory, simulation and architectural testing. Through computational intelligence, biological systems, environmental analysis and digital fabrication, my work investigates how architecture can become more responsive to the conditions it inhabits. This research forms a central part of my portfolio, connecting architectural design with scientific exploration and technological innovation.

My long-term ambition is to work at the intersection of research and practice, contributing to new methodologies that are experimental, adaptive and grounded in rigorous investigation. I am interested in architecture not only as a built outcome, but as a dynamic system embedded within ecological, social and technological contexts.

For me, the future of architecture must be interdisciplinary, responsive and guided by both ecological intelligence and human empathy. The question is not whether cities will change, but whether they will change intelligently. My goal is to help ensure they do, through design that is informed by nature’s resilience, supported by scientific evidence, and oriented towards meaningful human and environmental impact.

I am now preparing to begin my RIBA Part 3 journey, with the ambition of becoming a Chartered Architect. This has been my dream for as long as I can remember, and each stage of my education and professional development has strengthened my commitment to shaping architecture that is thoughtful, intelligent and transformative.
